Dentures

Dentures, whether partial or full, are removable false teeth that offer numerous benefits such as improved eating and speach, as well as restoring confidence with a natural smile, while enhancing the facial shape.

What is a denture?

Dentures are removable false teeth that come with a host of benefits, including helping to improve how you eat and speak, as well as boosting your confidence by restoring your smile. They can also enhance facial shape, especially around the lips and  cheek area. You can either have partial dentures for a few missing teeth or full dentures to a replace a whole set of teeth on the upper or lower jaw.

They are usually made from acrylic, or a combination of acrylic and metal. They are all custom made by skilled technicians, using a wide variety of acrylic, composite and sometimes porelain. High end modern materials ensure partial dentures blend in beautifully with existing teeth and complete dentures can pass for the real thing.

For improve stability and fit, dental implants are often used to provide a secure foundation for denture retention.

What does the treatment involve?

Before Fitting

The process of making and fitting dentures involves multiple appointments to ensure a secure and comfortable fit. After a thorough consultation, impressions of your mouth will be taken to create a wax model for checking fit, bite, and comfort. The final dentures will be manufactured in a laboratory, following which you will be invited for a fitting.

Complete dentures replace all teeth in the upper or lower jaw, featuring a gum-coloured arch with prosthetic teeth. Partial dentures are used for a few missing teeth, often held in place by metal hooks attached to existing teeth.

After fitting

It can take a little while to get used to your new dentures, especially if they are a complete set. They may feel odd at first and eating can be tricky, so it may be a good idea to start with softer foods and slowly introduce more challenging items. The amount of saliva in your mouth may increase, but this should soon improve as your mouth gets used to your replacement teeth.

Initially, speaking may be difficult but you can improve this by reading aloud and if you are experiencing any sore spots in your mouth, the denture surface may need some adjustment.

Aftercare

Dentures are designed to be hardwearing but they will last longer if you treat them with care. Dentures should be removed before you go to bed so your gums can have a rest, but they must be stored in water or denture fluid as they could lose their shape if allowed to dry out.

Clean your dentures with a special denture brush and remember to keep your gums and any remaining teeth clean too. You will also need to attend regular check-ups so your dentist and hygienist can keep an eye on your oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dentures

We recommend that you always consult with one of our clinicians before starting any treatment.

How soon can I be treated?

Our waiting times for an NHS examination and treatment appointments, for new and historic patients, vary. Our reception team will happily update you on current waiting times.

The NHS contract funds a set amount of dental activity for the year and we are obliged to deliver this evenly over the twelve months.

The level of NHS funding provided  is not high enough to enable us to meet the demand for NHS care that exists.

These factors lead to long waiting times to access NHS care.

Private care can be provided at all times with a minimal wait.

Your dentist will be happy to go through all available options including that of accessing some treatment options on a private basis alongside an NHS course of treatment.

How much will it cost?

All treatment plans will be discussed with you at the examination appointment, along with associated costs.

Complex treatments, may need multiple visits to complete the investigations needed prior to providing an estimate. This will be printed at reception, or if preferred emailed to you.

Please look at our Fees page for more details.
