Laser Dentistry

Laser Dentistry offers precise, minimally invasive treatments for gum disease, reshaping, and cavity removal. It uses advanced laser technology for faster healing and minimal discomfort during procedures.

What is a Laser Dentistry

Technological advances are changing our lives every day. Lasers have been shown to have a profound benefit for both patients and clinician in all fields of medicine, dentistry is no different. Lasers are changing the way we treat patients, providing a gentler, less invasive solution compared to traditional techniques.

Laser technology from Biolase is designed expressly for dental applications, and can be used in the treatment and management of periodontal (gum) disease, cosmetic treatments, minor oral surgery (including implant treatments), as well as restorative dentistry. Biolase dental lasers have been used to treat millions of patients worldwide.

At Cox and Hitchcock, Cyncoed, we have a Waterlase iPlus® and diode laser , enabling us to offer a wide variety of treatment solutions. The Waterlase iPlus® is a particularly versatile tool combining air, water and light energy to perform very precise dental procedures.

Our Laser Dentistry Procedures Include

remove gummy smile with waterlase laser dentistry

Smile Design

Contouring and shaping of the gum tissue can improve your smile by removing excess gum tissue that can give you a “gummy smile”, or make your front teeth appear irregular in size or shape. The Waterlase is a particularly versatile tool in smile design.

oral growth removal with laser dentistry

Removal of oral growths

Quick and safe removal of growths and excess tissue in your mouth, including gum tissue over a partly erupted tooth, small “tags” and growths such as polyps and fibromas can be efficiently removed and sent for pathological examination if appropriate.

gum recession and tongue tie treatments

Fix a “tongue tie”

The lingual frenum is a vertical band of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth. An elongated lingual frenum may restrict movement of the tongue. A child with this condition is commonly referred to as a "tongue tied". If left uncorrected, this might lead to speak difficulties.

Periodontal gum disease

Periodontal (gum) disease

Waterlase dentistry gives us the ability to perform minimally invasive periodontal procedures to deliver better patient –reported outcomes than traditional methods, reducing the frequency of surgical intervention and promote tissue repair.

For moderate to severe gum disease, ask your dentist about REPAIR minimally invasive periodontal treatments.

Labial and buccal Frenectomy

Frenectomy is the medical term for the procedure that corrects an unhealthy size, shape or position of the tissues connecting the lips, tongue and cheeks to the jaws. The labial (front of mouth) and buccal (side of the mouth), if prominent can interfere with denture retention, contribute to gum recession, and in some cases cause gaps between the front teeth.

Waterlase® Dentistry key benefits

The Waterlase iPlus®  uses technology combining YSGG laser energy and a controlled spray of water, a process called HydroPhotonics™. The light energy and water is incredibly precise, performing a wide range of treatments on teeth, bone and gums, with abscence of heat, vibration and pressure, the primary causes of discomfort with traditional instruments. We frequently use lasers for cosmetic, periodontal and implant procedures.  Treatments are less invasive with reduced inflammation and less post-operative discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Dentistry

We recommend that you always consult with one of our consultants before starting any treatment.

What is a Waterlaser?

The Waterlase iPlus® is an all tissue laser. The system combines a gentle water spray and laser energy for  successful use in a variety of dental procedures including treatment of teeth, gums and bone.

How does the Waterlase work?

What are the benefits of treatments with a laser?

The Waterlase iPlus® system is a safe and gentle atlernative to traditional dental intruments. The procedures are generally quicker with less discomfort during and after the procedures. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort, with less swelling and fewer complications compaed to traditional surgical techniques. The laser also kills bacteria and helps preserve bone and gum health.

What treatments can I have with a laser?

The Waterlase iPlus® can be used to carry out multiple procedures in and around the oral cavity:

Periodontics (gum disease treatments): The laser can assist in treatment of moderate to severe gum disease with the minimally invasive Repair Perio Protocol, as well as killing bacteria and help preserve gum and bone health.

Smile design: Provides a state-of-the-art procedure for reshaping and redesigning smiles.

Surgical procedures: Eliminates the need for conventional surgical tools, with a gentler solution with little to no (in some cases) anaesthesia, simplifying a variety of soft tissue surgical procedures from frenectomies to polyp removal and biopsy.

Implants: Gains effective access to disease sites below the gum to decontaminate infected implant surfaces.

Restorative dentistry: Patient friendly restorative procedures for cavity preparation without the use of traditional handpieces. * Please discuss suitability with one of the dentists providing a laser service.

Where can I have laser treatments?

Although the Waterlase iPlus® is a mobile unit, it is a very delicate instrument. It’s also very expensive to maintain and repair. So, we limit use to our Cyncoed practice where our trained clinicians carry out a variety of procedures. Please contact the Cyncoed practice for details.

Is laser treatment painful?

Patients experience minimal to no discomfort either during or after the procedure. Most laser applications use little, or in some cases no anaesthetic and avoid the use of traditional dental drills and instruments.

How much does laser treatments cost?

The cost of the laser procedure will depend on case complexity and management. Simple single tooth gum recontouring is from £85, while frenectomies are from £295. You will need a full assessment prior to any costing for any laser procedure.
